S-STEM Introduction and Project

Hello, my name is Ricardo. As one of the S-STEM Scholar students, I am very happy to be a part of this group. I am currently searching for opportunities as to what to do a research project on with an emphasis in applied mathematics. I have spoken with one of the professors at Glendale Community College in order to assist me with brainstorming ideas for this project. We talked about several areas where mathematics can be applied to, such as computing and number theory. I happen to find these two fields of particular interest. I've always been fascinating with what computers can do, and I think that it would be cool to learn about the mathematics that goes behind the programming to make them work.
As far as number theory goes, I find it really cool! Even though at this moment I don't know much about it, nonetheless, I find it really interesting and wouldn't mind doing research to learn more about it. Actually, this is one of the reasons why math is my favorite subject. Whenever I come across a new topic in math, seeing the connections that it makes with what I know is fascinating. This drives my motivation to continue to search for what comes next in the field of mathematics. Of particular interest, and something that I've always been fascinated about, is how mathematicians from a few hundred years ago where able to formulate all the theories that we now have and continue to use. These are theories that have withstand the test of time as we see applications of them throughout various fields of study. For this reason, I have chosen to keep an open mind as to what project I can do. Getting the opportunity to learn more math and apply it will make me very happy with my project!

  1. Ricardo!
This sounds great! Congrats on your love for math and what it can do for you as well as what the history of math has done for all of the world up until now. I found by looking up number theory after reading your post that number theory is sometimes called "The Queen of Mathematics" because of its foundational place in the discipline.
    good luck!!
